Nov 9th 2019 will mark the 9th Annual Uwharrie Veteran’s Day Ride. This annual veteran’s off-road event is purposefully designed to express gratitude to our American fighting men and women, bring veterans together for camaraderie and adventure, while supporting additional opportunities throughout the year. While all veterans benefit from the event, veterans in NC see the greatest return. The Uwharrie Veteran’s Day Ride draws veterans from Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
The event begins at the Uwharrie Outdoors Event Center with five plus hours of off-road driving. Seven-to-ten off-road clubs help make this event happen every year, each year taking a different trail responsibilities. Two clubs each are responsible for a ride on the private property, Big Creek. Two other clubs are responsible for the other private property, Grand Overland District. One club is responsible for the newly added overland route. And two other clubs, along with Piedmont Off-road Performance and Diesel, are responsible for trail rides within Uwharrie National Forest. All these groups provide open seats to our veterans who do not have off-road rigs so that they can get out on the trails.
After returning to the event site, a local scout troop provides a meal of chili, potatoes and all the fixin’s for the group. Around 1630 (4:30 pm for the civilians) we kick off the closing ceremony with a guest speaker, a veteran only raffle, retiring the colors, taps and 21-gun salute before presenting every veteran in the crowd with a challenge coin. Following the ceremony, we light field/deployment burn barrels as we move into the raffle which typically lasts 90-120 minutes. This year our raffle includes items from Rugged Ridge, ARB, Colby Valve, Hi-lift, Luci Lights, Factor 55, Bubba Rope, 30 Seconds Woodworking and more.
Through this event we are able to do other activities such as our Patriot Overland Adventures, Patriot Rendezvous, deep sea fishing trips and more, that help build the veteran community and strengthen the family. These events, through our Patriot Therapy program save lives. And saving lives is the highest calling.
