I joke around a lot about bacon being one of the major food groups but in all reality it is a very versatile meat that can go with almost ANY meal. We have all heard that bacon makes any meal better, whether you are having the standard bacon and eggs for breakfast, a grilled bacon and cheese for lunch, bacon cheeseburgers for dinner or a myriad of other bacon appetizers you could throw in the mix, it’s delicious.
When it comes to camping, backpacking or overlanding we bacon eaters need to be aware of how we store this tasty meat morsel. If backpacking, there is the option to buy pre-cooked/shelf stable bacon, while not quite as good as fresh, this will still let you have it on the trail. If camping or overlanding is you thing then you are in a better place to enjoy these fresh cooked salty meat slabs. Coolers and 12 volt fridges have come a long way over the years and allow us to, in some cases, keep uncooked meats just as we do at home. The FDA says that Bacon storage is as follows, Fridge: 7 days, Freezer: 1 month (FDA Ref. & Freezer Storage Chart) this is the most important part to careful of… Bad things can happen when bacon isn’t cared for properly and throwing out bacon can bring a tear to your eye!
In the movie “Forrest Gump,” when Bubba was talking about how he has had shrimp, I feel bacon can be used the same way. There are thousands of recipes online, in books, etc. that you can try. Find a couple of these recipes and try them at home, take note of your favorites and get ready for your next bacon adventure!
It has been said that bacon being cooked sounds like applause…when next time you cook for your camping crew get ready for the standing ovation! You have earned it!!!
